Job Summary

The Import /Export Coordinator is responsible for supporting the daily activities of the International Import/Export and Customs Compliance Operations from item set up, PO inception and maintenance, to shipment and final delivery. The Import/Export operation is responsible for the movement of $1.5 billion worth of merchandise, over 30,000 container shipments annually out of 15 different country origins, and processing of over 25,000 US Customs entries. . The company continuously strives to achieve and maintain best in class practices and ultimately be considered a premiere importer by US Customs. This position is the lead, full time role in driving and executing supply chain initiatives that meet these goals.

The coordinator will be operating in a fast paced setting that primarily includes EDI, freight rate, and exception management; problem resolution and analysis, and reporting. They will engage with 3rd party providers overseas, ensuring adherence to Asia origin consolidation and factory load procedures, cube utilization, origin dwell, cost management/reduction. Additionally responsible for Asia vendor management to ensure on time shipping and compliance with “R” Us import requirements, and coordination with Planning and Allocation to manage purchase orders flow minimizing the impact of origin warehouse capacity and vessel space constraints. The coordinator will liaise with ocean carriers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, drayman as well as internal functional groups to ensure on-time delivery of Import and Export shipments.

Responsibilities will also include US Customs Classification and Compliance support, such as pre-classification of products, management of other government agency requirements, daily customs brokerage activities, Importer Self- Assessment (ISA) program, and reporting.

Key Responsibilities

Manage daily TRU/BRU Apparel Ocean and Airfreight Import origin and destination operations, exception and reporting activities

  • Analyze daily carrier/ broker reports to ensure documentation completeness, on-time product flow and Distribution Center communication; and develop action plans to address service related problems.

  • Coordinate, manage and drive origin activities with freight forwarder and Merchant teams related to FOB costing, container utilization, and cost savings opportunities

  • Liaison with Asia origin teams, Planning & Allocation department and other service providers to communicate daily booking exceptions, manage lead times, troubleshoot issues and ensure on time delivery

Control and manage airfreight process and expense

TRU Export ocean/airfreight operations management:

  • Liaise with export country managers, Procurement and ocean carriers/freight forwarders

  • Troubleshoot vendor related issues

  • Maintain export vendor guide

  • Lead meetings with the Export Team and execute agreed upon operational/ reporting/ communication solutions and steps

Support Customs Compliance and Classification

  • Classification of all “R” Us Division’s imported items. Request detailed information from vendors as needed (pictures, item description, value breakdown) to support classification

  • Following up on various reports such as the IPO/Discrepancy/problem logs/etc. and updating items when needed. Liaise with logistics and other internal functional groups, external service providers, vendors.

  • Request certification from various regulatory government agencies such as FCC, FDA, and F&W (retain all documents)

  • Compile Audit documentation for Importer Self-Assessment Program

  • Provide statistics and compliance data for various reports, ad hoc analysis and processes

  • Identify items which require copyright release and maintain copyright list


  • BS degree in International Logistics and /or equivalent work experience

  • Intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Experience in Microsoft Access preferred Excel and Access

  • Knowledge of the USA Harmonized Tariff Schedule and classification process a plus

  • Knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations a plus

  • Customs Broker License preferred but not required
