Manager, Merchandise Planning and Allocation

POSITION SUMMARY

The Manager of Planning and Allocation is responsible to grow sales, margin, reduce expenses and increase cash flow through the efficient use of inventory. They partner with a buyer(s) and are a strategic partner in the financial success of the overall business. They are responsible for implementing and overseeing planning and replenishment strategies for their teams. They are responsible for the hiring, training and development of analysts.

Strategy

  • Partner with the buyers in aligning their team’s efforts with divisional and corporate strategies and goals

  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to improve business processes, regularly partner with other resources such as the Merchandising and Dotcom, Forecasting, Marketing, Merchandise Presentation and Logistics teams

  • Build partnerships with vendors to collaboratively improve efficiencies to reduce supply chain costs and maximize inventory investments

  • Build talent by providing support, direction, coaching and leadership

  • Support, embrace, grow and drive continuous improvement

  • Find opportunities to enhance current business by streamlining processes and driving strategic initiatives

Leadership/ Talent Enhancement

  • Provide feedback, coaching and guidance to enhance skill development and resolve poor performance; help others identify and prioritize and develop their areas of improvement

  • Take decisive, timely action to address important short-term and long-term issues and follow through on individual and team commitments

Planning & Allocation

  • Responsible for planning and executing inventory plans to drive sales, margin and inventory turnover improvements

  • Key tasks include:

  • Use resources such as historical information, current trends, ad calendar, feature shop and end cap plans, TV plans and Merchants vision to build and reforecast inventory plans that align to promotional activity and end of year goals.

  • Partner with the Merchant and Finance team as needed to create accurate margin forecasts

  • Review obsolete inventory and partner in life cycle management strategies to determine end of life transitions.

  • Proactively share plans with supply chain partners to ensure operational readiness and execution

  • Plan inventory to properly maintain in-stocks and support sales, always being proactive to make quick adjustments across departments for both stores and digital businesses

  • Ensure system settings accurately reflect business realities, such as vendor lead times and order cycles

  • Review stock-to-sales ratios (weeks of supply)

  • Collaborate with the Merchant team in creating assortments by making new item recommendations as well as end-of-life plans and markdown strategies

  • Collaborate with the Logistics team as on issues such as delivery and direct-to-store orders

  • Partner with the Marketing team to review promotional forecasts and final copies of ads and to ensure 100% in- stock position for all promotional events

  • Partner with IT whenever there is a need for new reporting capabilities requirements to support projects

  • *Supervise Purchase Order Management by handling approvals and rejections and supervising content to ensure that POs are within guidelines and aligned to financial goals; review order amounts to ensure they fit within the OTB plan

  • +Account for Advanced Shipping Notice (ASN) inventory in the forecast and plan of assigned categories

Forecasting

  • *Employ strategy to manage inventory flow to stores

  • *Interact with and educate members of your division on the benefits of consensus forecasting

  • Partner as needed with the S&OP team to ensure appropriate inventory allocation and flow strategies to meet local market needs;

  • *Plan and reforecast shared items for TRU, BRU and Dotcom chains

  • *Review items with high forecast variances and work to resolve discrepancies

  • Partner on promotional forecasts, feature shop forecasts, TV items, missing forecasts, variance in weekly forecasts and ensure if ad lifts are in place in a timely manner

  • Ensure new items and key product launches are in stock. Measure early results to adjust inventory forecasts and product flow as needed to drive sales and inventory productivity.

  • Confirm alignment of forecasted sales quantities with space allocated on POGs to be sure there is efficient use of inventory and presentations will look good at store level.

Store Operations

  • Support store locations and the needs of new channels and growth ventures by managing the forecasting, planning and replenishment process. Responsible for managing timely and accurate inventory flow to stores.

  • Conduct store visits. Tasks includes:

  • Discuss with Store managers and identify issues and guest concerns and needs.

  • Review merchandise in stocks (floor and back room) and inventory levels and understand the proper inventory for space dedicated to product

  • Review whether stores are following the Plan-o-gram vision and that signage and promotions are presented correctly

Vendor Management related

  • Collaborate with vendors supplying the largest portion of the business. Collaborate on necessary inventory quantities and ordering strategy to support future sales. Key tasks include:

  • Determine initial order quantities on new items including timing dates for shipping

  • *Manage availability of products, shipping terms, optimum flow of products and promotional lifts

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • +5 years related experience

  • Advanced skills in

  • Inventory Planning

  • Supply Chain Management and Fundamentals

  • Negotiating Inventory Management

  • Business Analysis (margin analysis, inventory cost modeling and performance management skills)

  • Store Planning (merchandising layout, fixtures, signage, backroom, etc.)

  • Skills in Statistical Forecasting and using Report Builder

  • Advanced to intermediate Microsoft Office skills in Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint

  • Seasonal domestic travel as required
